First look : Fearless Madhuri Dixit in Gulab Gang

The first look of Madhuri Dixit's much-anticipated film Gulab Gang shows her sporting bruises on her face and hands.

Inspired by Sampat Pal-led Gulabi Gang in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, which fights for the rights of women in the region, the film is directed by Soumik Sen.

The film will see Madhuri's return to a full-fledged role after a gap of almost six years. She was last seen in an item song with Ranbir Kapoor in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

"I am happy that I am a part of a film which doesn't portray women as avenger or victim anymore. It's quite a strong film and when Soumik Sen (director) narrated me the script, I could not say no to him as I really liked the script. Female are protagonists in the film," said Madhuri.

Madhuri will be seen acting with Juhi Chawla, her yesteryear competitor, for the first time.

In the film, Madhuri will be seen in the avatar of an aggressive woman.

"You will see a completely different side of me. I am playing an aggressive woman here. She is tough. This film gave me a chance to do some stunts too," she added.

The film also stars Mahie Gill and Shilpa Shukla.

Meena Kumari Inspires Mahie Gill

Known for her earthy charm and beauty, Meena Kumari was one of the most prominent female actors during the ’60s and ’70s in Hindi cinema. While there are many who’ve been inspired by her beauty, Mahie Gill is the latest one join the bandwagon. Mahie, who will appear in Satish Kaushik’s directorial venture, Gangs of Ghost, will be sporting a look similar to the legendary actor in the song, Dil apna fokat me nahi dungi. Mahie is known to have done a lot of research on the veteran actor to get a detailed understanding of her body language. She also watched her films to get the nuances right. “I’m a huge fan of Meena Kumari and it was a great honour for me to emulate her on screen.

The opportunity was in no way less than perfect. I studied her in films like Baiju Bawra (1952) and Dil Ek Mandir (1963),” says Mahie, who is best known for her role in the Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster series.

Mahie has also worked on her make-up to look like the yesteryear actor. “She took a lot of interest in the styling of the song and also gave personal inputs in terms of outfits and make-up,” says a source close to the film.

The track required a retro feel and the director is pleased with the final outcome. “We wanted the song to have an old-world feel. That is why we fashioned Mahie's look on the lines of the great Meena Kumari. It has come out terrifically and Mahie has done a great job,” says Kaushik.
