'Besharam' strategy fails at the box office

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 8 October 2013 | 23:30

What should have been an ideal release strategy turned awry. Ranbir Kapoor's 'Besharam' that released midweek — on Wednesday October 2 — to cash in on a national holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti, miscalculated its box office reach.

The film did fantastic numbers on the first day. Ranbir, who has a mammoth fan following, proved his mettle — both as an actor and a superstar — by delivering the 19.40 cr initial. But, poor content and indifferent music got the numbers down by 40% the very next day. And from then, the film slid until Sunday, barely managing to cash in on the five-day weekend that it had at its disposal.

Made on a budget of close to 100 cr, with prints and advertising thrown in, the film will collect a fair sum from the satellite rights. But there reportedly is a rider in the contract, that the satellite price will depend on the box office run.

And, since the box office in India and overseas has been a let-down, the variables will change. Case in point is that Besharam collected 14.30 cr (GBOC) from abroad in five days — from nearly 700-odd screens — while 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', Ranbir's earlier release, had collected around 22 cr (GBOC) in the first three days of its overseas release, from a lesser number of screens. Taking the trend into account, 'Besharam's chances of a recovery seem bleak.

Besharam: Business goes down, earns Rs 40.31 cr in four days

Besharam: Business goes down, earns Rs 40.31 cr in four days

New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor starrer 'Besharam' has failed to capitalise on the hype that surrounded it before the release. The film's business has failed to live up to the expectations. Trade analysts Taran Adarsh tweets, "#Besharam *actuals* Wed ₹ 21.56 cr, Thu ₹ 7.13 cr, Fri ₹ 5.68 cr, Sat ₹ 5.94 cr. Total: ₹ 40.31 cr nett. EPIC DISAPPOINTMENT!" Adarsh further tweets, "Thu + Fri + Sat *combined total* is less than what it collected on Wed [₹ 21.56 cr]. Shocking!" Directed by Abhinav Singh Kashyap, the film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Pallavi Sharda in important roles.

It's a big disappointment for the makers of 'Besharam' because it was seen as a sure shot hit at the box-office prior to its release. However, the film still has some days to regain the lost momentum.

Is Katrina Kaif responsible for poor performance of Ranbir Kapoor’s Besharam?

Written By Unknown on Friday, 4 October 2013 | 21:30

Here’s some insider dope about Ranbir Kapoor’s new found hesitation around promoting Besharam. As has been doing the rounds amongst media folk, Ranbir didn’t follow up on the film’s promotions in Mumbai and Delhi- the centers of media houses, and chose to meet the press in smaller cities like Jalandhar and Chandigarh instead. From Besharam’s marketing crew, this behavior draws a deep sigh of frustration.

Dig deeper and they tell you that each time they spoke to Ranbir to take part in a mass appeal driven media event in Mumbai and Delhi, he would agree at first. But then, each evening, after a long phone call to his lady love Katrina Kaif, Ranbir would back out from these events.

Katrina provoked him each time over to stay away from the intrusive TV channels and paparazzi this time around. So much so, Ranbir dropped out of an event organized by the film’s producers’- Reliance Entertainment- at the last minute in Mumbai yesterday, leaving organizers high and dry.

Both the film’s marketing team, and people familiar with the Kapoor kid say that it’s most unusual for him to behave like this! And then, their sighs speak volumes about what they think of Katrina’s ‘guidance’ for her boyfriend!

Never used my father's name to enter film industry : Javed Jaffrey

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 29 September 2013 | 05:36

Noted actor Javed Jaffrey says he has never used his father Jagdeep`s influence to get work.

Javed, son of veteran actor-comedian Jagdeep, is known for donning various hats - that of an actor, dancer, singer, choreographer, VJ, ad filmmaker, among others.

He made his acting debut with `Meri Jung` in 1985 where he made a huge impact in a negative role. He has been part of many hit films like `100 Days`, `Fire`, `Earth`, `Salaam Namaste`, `Singh is Kingg` and `3 Idiots` and others.

"Being the son or daughter of a legendary film personality you get more respect. But I have never used that (my father`s name) as an influence to enter industry. It is not that I got work because of him. My father did not do a film for me or launched me, he wanted us to do things on our own," Javed said.

"Rather I never thought I will enter the film industry, it happened all by chance. Destiny played a part and brought me here in this industry," he said.

Javed has played a variety of roles, from negative to positive, but he has a penchant for comedy.

"I like to play all kind of roles. You can`t do same stuff every time as it becomes boring. Comedy is my soft spot. But I love doing action, thriller, drama and negative (roles). I am not comfortable with sexuality, intimate scenes," he said.

The actor will be seen next in debutante director Faraz Haider`s `War Chhod Na Yaar`.

"I am playing captain Qureshi from the Punjab region of Pakistan. So my tone (language) in the film is Punjabi-Urdu. The film establishes relationship in an interesting way. I had great fun doing this film," he said.

Javed will also be seen alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor in `Besharam`. The actor has a few scenes with Ranbir and a climax scene with Neetu and Rishi Kapoor.

"We did interact on sets. I am a big fan of Rishiji, he is the best actor. Neetuji is fantastic. Ranbir is a fine actor and he is very focused about his work. They are humble and nice people," he said.

Javed will also be seen in Hrithik Roshan starrer `Bang Bang` and `Jo Bhi Karva Lo` with Arshad Warsi.

Ranbir Kapoor leaves SRK's record behind!

Written By Unknown on Friday, 27 September 2013 | 09:08

Ranbir Kapoor has never before taken his career so seriously and has blatantly disclosed his plans to become the "number one" in Bollywood during a recent interview with a leading daily.

Ranbir reportedly posed a direct threat to none other than the king of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan. SRK on the other hand has left no stone unturned to ensure that his latest release, Chennai Express, had the biggest ever release for a Bollywood film with 3500 screens in India and 700 plus screens abroad.

But now Ranbir has finally overturned SRK's numbers with his latest flick 'Besharam', which will be be releasing in atleast 3600 screens in India, making it the biggest release in Hindi film history till date.  The race to capture the most number of screens has become a preferred device of Bollywood these days as the number of theatres has a direct impact on the first day collection of the film.

Utpal Acharya, Distribution Head of Reliance Entertainment, gave a thumbs up to the news and told a leading daily, "Yes, 'Besharam' will be the largest release till date, both in India and abroad. I am looking at 3600 plus screens. I had planned for 4000 screens but Pawan Kalyan's Telugu film 'Attarintiki Daredi' which releases today has a got a phenomenal response in advance booking. That takes away some screens which I had planned in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala."

Acharya added, "I am very confident of 'Besharam', it is a full family commercial entertainer and more the screens, more the revenue."

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh commented, "A wide release can go well with a big film like 'Besharam'. Post 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', Ranbir has become a big craze. Plus, you have the Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap holding the reins."Acharya offers another justification of the numbers game saying, "When the film releases at a large number of theatres, the audience can pick and choose where they want to see it, an expensive one or a cheaper option. So, more the screens, lesser the piracy."

A leading distributor (on request of anonymity) also told the daily, "You need to have a film like 'Chennai Express' or 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', which sustains fabulously, to get the numbers. Else it just amounts to higher collections on only day one and this is simply because the film is more in your face. If 'Besharam' is accepted well, yes, then it would definitely make sense to release in so many screens. And yes, even 100-150 more screens can make a difference."

Ranbir Kapoor Wanted Katrina Kaif in Besharam?

Written By Unknown on Friday, 23 August 2013 | 01:27

The latest buzz to grip the tinsel ville is that of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. That Kat wants to work with Ranbir is no news, but now we hear that the Kapoor lad is equally gung-ho about teaming up with his ladylove, and is recommending her name to his directors.

Sources claim that Katrina Kaif could have romanced Ranbir Kapoor in Besharam as the actor wanted her in the movie. But, apparently director Abhinav Singh Kashyap was stuck on the newbie Pallavi Sharda, last seen in Heroine.

It’s said that Ranbir was not keen on Pallavi to be a part of this ambitious project, which also stars his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. Thus the actor strongly recommended Katrina’s name to Abhinav.

However, for the director, Pallavi was best suited for the role of female protagonist in his film, and he didn’t change his decision.

Also, it’s being said that Abhinav and Pallavi share a special bond and are more than just good friends. Clearly, by sticking on to his decision, Abhinav has taken this bonding to a new level, claim sources.

Earlier, too, there were rumours that Ranbir pushed Katrina Kaif’s name to Imtiaz Ali for his new venture. Kat was also more than eager to work with the director, which even meant that the lovebirds will get some time together on the sets given their hectic schedules. Coincidentally, the actor’s ex-flame Deepika Padukone was also in the running for the same role, and by now, you know who has bagged the plum project.

`Besharam` Ranbir leads to `Besharam` Sunny Leone`s adult website

Online search for Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming film's promo 'Besharam' leads to an adult website featuring Sunny Leone

In a bizarre twist, an adult content website featuring Sunny Leone has been riding high on the promo of Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming film 'Besharam'

While the makers of Ranbir Kapoor's next film are hoping the audience queues up at their computers to catch the new promo, looks like it's Sunny Leone who's become a surprise beneficiary.

Ranbir Kapoor Those who have been logging in to watch the film's new trailer are being directed to a different site altogether that shows models in skimpy clothes, including Sunny Leone.

Says a source, `People are looking forward to watching the trailer as it features Ranbir. But the other website seems to be hijacking all the attention that's coming their way.

The title of the film is similar to the name of the website and that way a lot of Internet traffic is being diverted to the adult site.`

Sunny, however, shirks off the incident, stating, `I don't own this site. It was a company in America and I shot for it in the past. I don't know much about the site and its promotions, as we are in no way involved in it. But I wish both the film and the website all the best.`

Producer Himanshu Mehra however says the matter is yet to be brought to his notice by his team. He states, `I am not aware.`

Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan fans miffed with Ranbir Kapoor?

The trailer of Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Besharam’ has gone viral on Youtube. And with the rising curiosity associated with the movie, there are mixed reactions from the audience all over social media, according to a report in a leading daily

Social media sites have been abuzz with fans of industry heavyweights Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan voicing their unhappiness at young RK taking the mickey out of the super stars.

Ranbir Kapoor in his ever cheeky avatar has taken a jibe at the Khans in the trailer with references to superhits, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ as well as ‘Dabangg’.

Ranbir has previously also portrayed flamboyant characters. ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ was one such film where he played a casanova opposite Deepika Padukone. Even his critically appreciated role as the title character in ‘Barfi!’ had the cheeky - cocky smartness that the young Kapoor has mastered ever since he made his debut in ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Sawariya’

The star has achieved superstardom as well as the eye of controversies in a short span of 6 years what the Khans had to work for over a decade to achieve. He has the talent and has chosen mostly right movies that have suited his age and have done relatively well in the Box Office compared to other stars who made their debut around the same time.

Whether he justifies his character in ‘Besharam’ or not remains to be seen but there is no denying that Ranbir Kapoor is almost about to take over the kings lair that the Khans had ruled for the last 25 years.

Mumbai: Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor got to play a police officer in upcoming film `Besharam` after his son Ranbir Kapoor suggested his name to director Abhinav Kashyap.
When Abhinav said that they had to cast a senior actor to play a police officer, it was Ranbir who suggested his father`s name.

Ranbir Kapoor Copying Shah Rukh Khan In Besharam?

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 25 July 2013 | 09:59

Apart from spending quality time with Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor is busy shooting for his upcoming film Besharam these days. Finding inspiration at home, Ranbir Kapoor will now step into his father Rishi Kapoor’s shoes by emulating him in his biggest chartbuster Om Shanti Om in the film.

For the record, Shah Rukh Khan had remixed the song in his film with the same name Om Shanti Om. Farah Khan had brought almost all the Bollywood stars from Priyanka Chopra, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty to Salman Khan to shake a leg with him in the song.

Rishi Kapoor had shot the song for the 1980 film Karz. He had won the hearts of millions with his rocking performance in a shining metallic outfit in the song sung by none other than Kishore Kumar.

Now, Ranbir will be putting his dancing skills on display in the song in a similar costume. Actress Pallavi Sharda will be seen sharing the screen space with Ranbir Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh also have a short appearance in the film.

With Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Barfi, Ranbir has already given big blockbusters, and now, he's also taking inspiration from SRK's strategies. Hope the Khans are updated on this move by Mr Kapoor!

Ranbir Adapts Rishis Iconic Look For Besharam

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 24 July 2013 | 08:31

Ranbir Kapoor seems all too keen to be following in his father Rishi Kapoor’s footsteps. Having already made a mark, recreating Rishi Kapoor’s iconic song ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ in a 2008 film of the same name, Ranbir looks geared up to tackle yet another song from his father’s heyday: ‘Om Shanti Om’ from the 1980 super hit ‘Karz’.

Though Ranbir will not be recreating the entire song, he has allegedly borrowed from his dad’s look in the same, for a song in his upcoming Abhinav Kashyap starrer ‘Besharam’. The metallic suit that Rishi Kapoor made popular may now be part of Ranbir’s fortunes as well.
An industry source revealed candidly: “He (Ranbir) will remind viewers of Rishi’s song ‘Om shanti om’ in one of the songs from his next. He will sport a metallic outfit that is similar to the one worn by Rishi in the number.”
However, director Abhinav Kashyap insists that this was an unplanned co-incidence. “The resemblance in both outfits is uncanny. However, we had not planned this. When we realised the commonality, we laughed about it.”
The source added the reason behind the same-to-same look: “When it was composed and choreographed, the makers thought that a metallic dress would go best with it and they remembered that Rishi had sported something similar in the ‘Karz’ song.”

‘Besharam’, directed by Abhinav Kashyap, also stars Ranbir’s parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. The film is set for a 2 October, 2013 release.

The Kapoor’s Family Venture For Besharam

Written By Unknown on Monday, 22 July 2013 | 05:54

Even with big hits in the Rs 100 crore club, like ‘Barfi!’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, Ranbir Kapoor is still choosing to stay clear of films starring Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Initially, the makers of ‘Besharam’ had planned that the trailer of Ranbir Kapoor’s next film directed by Abhinav Kashyap would be released with either ‘Chennai Express’ or ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’. (These release on 9 August and 15 August respectively.)

But now, after Ranbir Kapoor pitched in with his experience, the entire team has decided to avoid the clash between the two films and release the trailer before any of them come out in theaters.

This happened because Ranbir Kapoor felt that if the ‘Besharam’ trailer came out during the festive releases of either ‘Chennai Express’ or ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’, then it would get lost in the crowd. Because of this, the trailer will now be released during a mega-event a week before either of the films release. The tentative date for the release of the trailer is now 2 August, 2013.

‘Besharam’ stars Ranbir Kapoor in a lead role and also features his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh in pivotal roles. Javed Jaffrey plays the antagonist to Ranbir Kapoor’s rogue character. The film has a tentative release date of 3 October, 2013.

Catch Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor bonding on the sets of ‘Besharam’

Recently, Ranbir Kapoor got a pleasant surprise on the sets of Besharam when his friend Shahid Kapoor paid a visit to him. What followed next was a candid tete-a-tete between the two heartthrobs.

If you are unaware of their friendship, let’s tell you, the two young actors, also sharing a common surname, like spending time with each other whenever possible. Coincidentally, the two actors were shooting in close proximity, and when Shahid came to know about it, he decided to meet Ranbir for a while.

The boys apparently had an animated discussion on cars. In the photo taken by a unit member, the two buddies look in a great mood. The weird animal-print dress on Ranbir seems to be a part of his wardrobe for Besharam, while Shahid looked cool in casuals.

Ranbir and Shahid are friends for a while now. Since the two stars are good dancers they were even in talks for a world tour together last year.

Besharam, directed by Abhinav Kashyap, also casts Ranbir’s parents Rishi Kapoorand Neetu Singh. The veterans play police officers in the movie, while their ladlaplays an oddball, who has na sammaan ka moh, na apmaan ka bhay

Ranbir Kapoor named "Pepsi" in Besharam

Written By Unknown on Monday, 29 April 2013 | 04:51

Ranbir Kapoor garnered quite a lot of critical acclaim and awards for his lovely portrayal of the lead character Barfi! In fact, most of his recent onscreen characters seem to have quirky names.
The news is that Ranbir's character in the under production film Besharam is named Pepsi.

Interestingly, while Ranbir's onscreen name in the Abhinav Kashyap's film is Pepsi, in real life he also endorses the cola brand of the same name.
