‘Boss’ earns 39 crores in five days

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 22 October 2013 | 10:19

Boss’ which is an all in all action masala movie starring Akshay Kumar did decent business and managed to gather Rs. 39 crores in first five days of its business.
‘Boss’ had a strategic release. The movie was released on Wednesday which was a National holiday on account of Bakra-Eid. The film collected Rs. 12.6 crores on its first day. But in the subsequent days the business dripped. It collected Rs. 7.84 crores on Thursday, Rs. 5.93 crores on Friday and it collected only Rs. 7.45 crores on Sunday. Its weekend business was Rs. 26.62 crores.
According to trade analyst Amod Mehra, cricket matches distracted the crowd expected to visit the theaters. He said, “With high-octane matches going on between India and Australia, the figures were affected for sure. Having said that, a film that has to click will do somehow. When you open a film on a Wednesday, you are looking for additional boost. Rs 40 crore is a decent figure though.”
Exhibitor Rajesh Thandani said, “Over the weekend, 'Shahid' made around Rs 2 crore. For a small-budget film, it’s not a terrible number although Friday proved to be dismal. With the kind of positive reviews it has garnered, it might do well over the coming week, thanks to word of mouth.” He was sounding optimistic about the business of ‘Boss’.
‘Boss’ also received cold response from the reviewers. According to a reviewer, the movie was  “fast-paced, zany, full-on masala fare. There is a tempting swagger to Akshay’s performance matched by the narration’s tidal tempo. Irresistible energy and endearing gusto underline the show’s voracious appetite for a comic kill.”
Though reviewers enjoyed Akshay’s energy and comic timing, they felt that he could not singlehandedly save the movie which was lying low on a weak plot.
‘Boss’ is an action masala movie directed by Anthony D’Souza. The movie was released on 16th October. The film is co produced byCape of Good Films & Ashwin Varde Productions. The lead casts of the movie are Akshay Kumar, Mithun Charaborty, Ronit Roy, Shiv Pandit, Aditi Hydari and Danny Denzongpa.
‘Boss’ seemed like a mixture of action flicks of Akshay Kumar. There were too many mindless action sequences and the comedy didn’t hit the right notes. Aditi performed averagely. Even the songs did not strike instantly. It was an average movie.

Pakistani film Waar earns 40 million in 3 days, sets record

Pakistani bilingual film Waar has created a record by earning rupess 40 million in three days during Eid festival. The Shaan starrer action-thriller is said to have the highest box office collection till date. Akshay Kumar-starrer Bollywood film Boss, according to the entertainmentcircles, played second fiddle to Waar, by earning 10 million rupess only, reported the Dawn newspaper.

It was perhaps the first Eid after many years when a Pakistani movie was having packed three shows. In certain cinemas, even the fourth show - from 3am to 6am - was dedicated to Waar.

The movie has been released with 35 prints across the country. Written by Hasan Waqas Rana, it is the directorial debut of Bilal Lashari. The film also stars Shamoon Abbasi, Meesha Shafi and Ayesha Khan.

The war on terror in Pakistan and its effects on the world have inspired the storyline, but one can however see a stylised interpretation of it.

Some critics found the script not that strong, but the music, cinematography and overall treatment of the film made it a super hit.

Khiladi Akshay Kumar: Boss of the masses

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 17 October 2013 | 22:07

Akshay Kumar’s new film Boss saw historic opening at single screens all over India. It is probably his biggest first-day collections till date in single screens. On its first day, people were seen dancing in theatres across places like Nagpur, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. The unprecedented opening at single screens is a clear indication yet again of Akshay’s popularity and connect with the masses.

The night before the film hit the theatres, Akshay had a special show for his fans who had come from all across India. On Tuesday night Akshay organised a screening at Cinemax Versova for his fans. There was ‘fan’-demoniam at the venue. As the rapid fire entertainment unfolded they laughed, cried, danced, cheered lustfully and whistled when Akshay’s agile action sequences came on. Some of them even ran to the screen and kissed it. The evening further ratified Akshay’s hero-of-the-masses status off screen as well as on-screen.

The last time a film had opened so huge in single screens and received such mass adulation was Salman Khan’s Wanted.

The Boss director Anthony d’Souza seems to be in a daze. “I would’ve gone into oblivion after the failure of my debut film Blue. It’s only Akshay Kumar’s faith in me that kept me alive as a filmmaker,” says Anthony tearfully.

Trade Speak:

Taran Adarsh:

Boss has fared exceptionally well at single screens. It proves that a good sensible masala film will always find an audience. As for Akshay, this is among his better performances. His presence and performance have been loved by all.

Amod Mehra:

As expected Boss has taken a commendable start in the single screens, as it falls in the action-comedy genre. When it comes to action combined with comedy Akshay alone is the true Boss!

'Grand Masti' grosses Rs 100 crore

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 6 October 2013 | 04:31

Grand masti

The box office is probably one of the most unpredictable things. While new releases have proven to be duds, the buzz of the earlier releases are also seeing a dip. The good news though, is that 'Grand Masti' has become the highest grossing adult comedy, of all time, by collecting Rs 100 crore gross worldwide, and Rs 95.25 crore in India as per official figures. In its third week, Grand Masti continues to reign at the box office. But this could be because there haven't been too many impressive releases either. The Lunchbox also continues to do well, in various parts and has collected Rs 16.59 crore in its first week and second weekend. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh explains, "Grand Masti is holding well in week three, and The Lunchbox has managed to do well too, but the figures have definitely dropped gradually for both the films."

According to trade expert Girish Johar, 'Grand Masti' has crossed Rs 100 crore, worldwide, and become the highest grossing adult comedy. The Lunchbox did well according to its budget in the first week, and it is doing decently in the second week also. 'Phata Poster Nikla Hero' has done a business of around Rs 33 crore so far, but that's not very good. However, producer Ramesh Taurani isn't complaining. "The film has proven to be above average, though we did expect it to become a super hit.

But we have recovered our mone and are hoping that it will maintain the business, this week too," says Taurani. Akshay Rathi, of Rathi Group of cinema says, "We have Grand Masti in few of our theatres and Phata Poster... in a few others, but the former is definitely doing better. It has emerged as a path-breaking film when it comes to business in the adult comedy genre. While many may not endorse it openly, a lot of people have clearly enjoyed the film." In the new releases we have the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer, Besharam which saw a Gandhi Jayanti release. Films such as Warning 3D, Prague and Raqt are also in theatres, but are being dubbed as disasters. "Among the new releases though, Warning 3D is still doing better than others," states Adarsh while Johar opines, "Warning 3D hasn't fared well, and it didn't live up to the expectations. And Prague isn't even worth talking about." Warning 3D collected approximately Rs 2.75 crore in its opening weekend. Among the Hollywood releases in India, films such as Rush and Elisyium are doing well, while Prisoners is doing decently. Lined up for next week, are Runner Runner and Diana and both seem promising.

Besharam: Business goes down, earns Rs 40.31 cr in four days

Besharam: Business goes down, earns Rs 40.31 cr in four days

New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor starrer 'Besharam' has failed to capitalise on the hype that surrounded it before the release. The film's business has failed to live up to the expectations. Trade analysts Taran Adarsh tweets, "#Besharam *actuals* Wed ₹ 21.56 cr, Thu ₹ 7.13 cr, Fri ₹ 5.68 cr, Sat ₹ 5.94 cr. Total: ₹ 40.31 cr nett. EPIC DISAPPOINTMENT!" Adarsh further tweets, "Thu + Fri + Sat *combined total* is less than what it collected on Wed [₹ 21.56 cr]. Shocking!" Directed by Abhinav Singh Kashyap, the film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Pallavi Sharda in important roles.

It's a big disappointment for the makers of 'Besharam' because it was seen as a sure shot hit at the box-office prior to its release. However, the film still has some days to regain the lost momentum.

Box Office: 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' sprints past Rs. 32 crore in opening weekend

Despite mixed reviews, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag gathered pace at the domestic box office during its first weekend run.

The movie had Rs. 1.05 crore net from the Thursday previews to give it a decent start on Friday. The morning shows on Friday did not draw many footfalls, but the crowds came in during the evening shows. And the trend has been upward since then. The Friday collection was Rs. 8.50 crore net. Saturday saw the collection rise to Rs. 10.70 crore net.

Sunday was still better with an estimated Rs. 12 crore. The total first weekend aggregate of the film comes out at Rs. 32.25 crore.

The film got best audience response from Delhi and East Punjab. Even the collections from Mumbai, UP and Mysore are very good.

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is happy that the film has been accepted by the audience.

“It's a happy sign, it gives us more latitude now to break the glass ceiling. This could be a defining moment for all of us, as storytellers, filmmakers, technicians and actors,” Mehra said at a press conference to announce the success of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The film, starring Farhan Akhtar, is the biopic of the Indian athlete Milkha Singh. It also stars Sonam Kapoor and Pawan Malhotra

Lootera starts Off Well At Box Office

Thanks to the widely spread positive word of mouth around the film, Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha's 'Lootera' has received a good response at the box-office.

Vikramaditya Motwane-directed Lootera, produced by Balaji and Phantom, opened to a strong domestic collection of Rs. 5.15cr on Friday. Even before its release, a positive word of mouth on the film was floating across on social media and within the industry which helped the film take a good initial.

Positive reviews continued which resulted in a steady rise in the business in the range of 25-30% over the weekend. Early estimates indicate that the opening weekend collection would be in the range of Rs 19 cr; exemplary for a film with a defined audience and given a controlled urban multiplex release.

Business has been particularly strong in the territories of Mumbai, Mysore, West Bengal and Punjab. The gross collections in the opening weekend in the international markets are already in excess of $700,000.

Made at a total cost of 32cr (including P&A), while major recoveries have happened through non-theatre sales, theatre revenues have kept the regional sub-distributors happy and hugely augmented the film's profitability.

The other release Policegiri, Sanjay Dutt's first big release after his recent jail sentence, is a larger-than-life South remake and clearly targeted at the multiplexes but even there the business isn't anything to rave about.

The coming week has several small films lined up for release but the most prominent release happens to be Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Bhaag Milkha Bhaag starring Farhan Akhtar in the role of Milkha Singh. The recent trailers of this biopic received an encouraging response and the film hold's immense promise. The only prominent small release of the week happens to be BA Pass starring Shilpa Shukla of Chak De India fame.

Lootera earns Rs.19 crore over weekend, Sanjay Dutt's Policegiri falls flat

Excellent reviews from critics and word of mouth helped Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera earn Rs.19 crore over the first weekend.

Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha-starrer opened to an average box office collection of Rs.5.15 crore on Friday but Saturday and Sunday saw 25-30 percent jump in the collection mainly due to word of mouth.

Sanjay Dutt starrer Policegiri fell flat and has earned Rs.8.25 crore over the weekend. With limited release and lack of promotions, the film couldn't perform as expected.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani 2nd weekend collection at Box Office

Written By Unknown on Monday, 10 June 2013 | 04:55

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's latest outing Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) seems to be on a record breaking spree as it has been setting new benchmarks at the Box Office everyday ever since it has hit the screens on May 31. The latest in its record list is that the Ayan Mukerji and Karan Johar's second combo movie has become second highest grosser in the second weekend after 3 Idiots, which had raked in Rs 33 crores.

Undeterred by new release Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (YPD 2), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has continued its rocking run at the Indian Box Office in the second week. The movie received very good response on the eighth day, especially in circuits like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and a few other parts in South India. Its second Friday collection is equal to the first Friday business of Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 in the domestic market. Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, which released in 1,800 screens in the country, received mixed feedback from both critics as well as viewers.

This made Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani become the first choice for many film goers in the second weekend. The Ranbir-Deepika starrer witnessed big jump in its business on Saturday and Sunday. Its weekend collection has become another big record in Indian Cinema. In its second weekend, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has collected Rs 29 crores nett at the Indian Box Office, taking its 10-day domestic total to Rs 136.61 crores nett. Its breakup is Rs 7 cr on Fri, Rs 10.25 cr on Sat and Rs 11.75 cr on Sun. In the second weekend, the movie has once again topped the domestic business chart, pushing down the new release Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 to the second position.

After couple of bad weeks, this week''s releases has brought smile back on face of exhibitors and distributors. Both the new releases have taken a good start and as expected Hollywood franchise release "Iron Man 3" is leading.

"Aashiqui 2" has taken a super start at places like Indore, Kanpur, Delhi, Jaipur and Bihar. Hit music ensured good beginning at mass centers of around 35% but film suffered due to big Hollywood release in metros where "Aashiqui 2" opening is as low as 20%.

"Iron Man 3" has taken nation by storm and opening is in the range of 45% which means film will grow by end of the day and will finish with super day one numbers. 3D version is fantastic and 2D is also doing good.

"Aashiqui 2" should eye 3.5 cr nett day one despite tough competition which will be a good result and "Iron Man 3" will cross 5 cr nett for sure unless growth is limited in evening.

Other new releases like "Life Mein Hungamaa Hai" and "Shree" are struggling from first show and will find tough to make any mark at box office.
