Nobody better to play Bobby Jasoos than Vidya Balan : Dia Mirza

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 8 October 2013 | 19:30

Dia Mirza, who has once again donned the producer's hat for thriller Bobby Jasoos, is confident about her decision to rope in Vidya Balan to play the lead because she feels no other actor could do justice to the role of a detective.

"There is nobody better than Vidya who can play Bobby. I love Vidya as a human being. Her remarkable quality of being rooted with the truth is reflected in every performance. I don't believe anyone else can act, the way she does," Dia said in a group interview here.

Sameer Shaikh will direct Bobby Jasoos and it will go on floors Nov 15. The film will release in April next year.

Dia's production banner is named Born Free Entertainment and she co-owns it with Sahil Sangha. Their first film was Love Breakups Zindagi in 2011.

Mahabharat first look: Vidya Balan’s animated Draupadi look seems mediocre!

Mahabharat first look: Vidya Balan’s animated Draupadi look seems mediocre!

We stumbled on the exclusive animated picture of the Kahaaniactor who has done voiceover for the powerful character of Draupadi in animation film Mahabharat

Filmmakers have always been fascinated by mythology, especially Mahabharat and are always eager to translate the epic on to the big screen. Similarly, the producer of the Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani, Jayantilal Gada, MD, Pen India Pvt Ltd has also tried his hand at attempting the big budget animated version of the holy scripture.
Reportedly, Gada’s Mahabharat will release alongside Hrithik Roshan’s much anticipated superhero flick Krrish 3 and will have 15 Bollywood stars lending their voices to various iconic characters, from Amitabh Bachchan who plays Bheeshma to Vidya Balan as Draupadi, Sunny Deol as Bheem, Jackie Shroff as Duryodhan, Anil Kapoor as Karna.
The makers feel Vidya’s voice is appropriate for Draupadi. “We couldn’t have asked for a better voice for the character of Draupadi than that of Vidya Balan,” Gada said.
Once The Dirty Picture star agreed to play Draupadi, her animated version was enhanced and worked upon in order to make it look closest to Vidya Balan. Wethinks the animated Vidya isn’t looking her glamorous best sans her trademark chubby cheeks and bony hands!
After Draupadi, we can’t wait to watch pictures of other characters from our most cherished epic story!

Biwi O Biwi: Vidya Balan pairs up with Farhan Akhtar in Shaadi Ke Side Effects

Written By Unknown on Monday, 22 July 2013 | 06:08

Stills from Shaadi Ke Side Effects and (below) Ghanchakkar.

Vidya Balan's Punjabi housewife character in Ghanchakkar found no takers, here's what you can expect from her next outing as a Bengali wife.

Vidya Balan is gearing up to play the Missus once again. Marriage has been a major part of Vidya Balan’s life lately. First cameKahaani (2011) in which she played the role of pregnant wife in search of her husband’s killer. On December 14, 2012, she tied the knot with producer Siddharth Roy Kapoor. Then came Ghanchakkar(2013).

About playing a housewife in the film, she says, “When I signed Ghanchakkar, people asked me why I wanted to play a housewife since it all sounded very boring. But I don’t think housewives are boring... they run their houses, which most of us tend to underestimate, and they also find ways to entertain themselves.”

In her next release Shaadi Ke Side Effects (sequel to Pyaar Ke Side Effects) she plays a married woman once again. Here’s looking at the differences in her character from her last film from the one in her next...

Ghanchakkar: VB’s character was loud, boisterous and temperamental. She played a Punjabi housewife, married to (Sanju) Emraan Hashmi.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects
: In this one, Vidya plays a smart, stylish, modern woman, who works in an ad agency, and is married to a Bengali guy called Sid Roy (Farhan Akhtar).

G: She played a housewife, who was a former con. She is pushy and ambitious and urges her husband to pull the one big con after which they can retire.

SKSE: She plays a working woman who gives up her work after a baby. Her priorities are in the right place and she’s a good mother.

G: She dressed in outlandish outfits in loud colours and wore horrendous OTT accessories.

SKSE: Vidya will be seen in stylish and sexy outfits in light, breezy colours. Her look was worked on by producer Rangita Nandy and stylist Jayati Bose, for months, till they finally came up with the right one.

G: The curvacious actress piled on more pounds to suit her character. A south Indian, shelearnt to speak Punjabi for the role.

SKSE: Vids has lost almost 12 kgs before she started shooting.

Post-Ghanchakkar, she followed a strict diet and exercise regimen to shed all the weight she had put on. She speaks Bengali fluently, so that she didn’t have to work on.

G: While Vidya has done a TV show (Hum Paanch) she had never done a comedy role. This was her first attempt at the funnies on the big screen. It didn’t really work.

SKSE: This light-hearted romcom revolving around a husband-wife relationship; seems to be more audience-friendly from her last cinematic outing.

'Dedh Ishqiya' kissing not as wild as 'Ishqiya': Arshad !!

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 14 July 2013 | 18:00

Actor Arshad Warsi has shot a lip-lock scene with Huma Quereshi for "Dedh Ishqiya" and says it's not as raunchy as "Ishqiya".

"Yes, a lot has been written about it and the same happened during 'Ishqiya' as well. Yes, we shot for the scene, but it's not as wild as 'Ishqiya'," Arshad told IANS.

For the 2010 crime thriller, director Abhishek Chaubey had shot intimate scenes between Arshad and Vidya Balan. However, the actor says the kissing scene in "Ded Ishiqya" has been "shot differently" by the director.

"We have almost shot for the film, just four days' shoot is left and some patch work - that's it," he added.

"Dedh Ishqiya" also stars Madhuri Dixit and Arshad calls her an "excellent actor" and added: "It's a pleasure working with her. She is unbelievable and a thorough professional."

"Dedh Ishqiya" also features Naseeruddin Shah.

IIFA 2013: 'Barfi' bags best film, Ranbir best actor, Vidya best actress

Written By Unknown on Saturday, 6 July 2013 | 23:11

Macau: 'Barfi' scooped top honours at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, at a ceremony in the Chinese gambling haven of Macau on Saturday that also celebrated a century of Bollywood.
'Barfi', a romantic comedy about a mute and deaf man and his relationship with two women. The movie was praised by critics for its positive portrayal of physically disabled people, a somewhat unusual theme for Bollywood screenplays.
India, the world's biggest film producer, makes more than double the number of Hollywood movies on an annual basis. Already popular in countries with sizable Indian populations, Indian films are also a growing hit with Chinese audiences as well as in Russia and Germany.
Hosted by Bollywood heartthrobs Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor, the four-hour ceremony of pulsating dance routines and colourful costume changes was attended by an audience of over seven thousand screaming fans.
Some of Indian cinema's biggest names including Deepika Padukone set the Macau arena alight with high octane performances, while actors like Boman Irani and modern pin ups such as Vidya Balan graced the green carpet.
"We make musicals. I think every film is a musical. Every film has at least six to seven songs," said Ayushmann Khurrana, nominated for best actor after his debut in 'Vicky Donor', a romantic comedy about sperm donation. "So that is how Bollywood is completely different from Hollywood."
Best actress was won by Vidya Balan for 'Kahani' while, Ranbir Kapoor for 'Barfi' took home the award for best actor. 'Barfi' also won the award for best film.
India's film entertainment sector is booming and estimated to generate revenue of close to $5 billion by 2015.
The choice of Macau to host the annual event comes as the gambling hub is pushing to diversify its customer base beyond the traditional casino punter who spends only on the baccarat tables rather than on entertainment, dining and hospitality.
Indian customers are increasingly targeted by the casino operators due to their tendency to stay longer than the average Chinese punter and their heavy spending on non-gaming pastimes.

No hattrick for Vidya Balan, Ghanchakkar fails at box office

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 2 July 2013 | 08:29

Bollywood's Dirty actress Vidya Balan, who had delivered back-to-back hits last year, failed to score a hattrick. Her latest debut comedy film Ghanchakkar did below average business at the box office in the first weekend.
Vidya was paired opposite her The Dirty Picture actor Emraan Hashmi but their magic did not work for director Rajkumar Gupta of No One Killed Jessica fame.

The film managed to collect a little above Rs. 20 crore in its opening weekend.

Ghanchakkar had opened to poor reviews and Indian Express' critic Shubhra Gupta had also said in her review that the movie "could have been edgier and funnier."

Ghanchakkar also faced stiff competion from Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor's Raanjhanaa, which collected Rs 10.70 crore nett in its second weekend.

Ghanchakkar earns Rs.22.03 crore on first weekend.

lDespite mixed reviews, UTV Motion Pictures' comedy "Ghanchakkar" has collected Rs.22.3 crore in India on its first weekend.

The Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan-starrer film opened to a slow start, earning Rs.7.2 crore on Friday. The film was made under the budget of Rs.20 crore.

The breakup of the film's earnings is: Fri Rs.7.20 crore, Sat Rs.7.30 crore, Sun Rs.7.80 crore.

Vidya Balan on marriage, love-hate relationship and getting kinky

Written By Unknown on Monday, 1 July 2013 | 23:57

They couldn't see eye to eye in The Dirty Picture. And now even in their latest releaseGhanchakkar; they have shared a rather quirky relationship with each other. While Vidya Balan has formed an unconventional pairing with Emraan Hashmi, she hasn't let go of her experimental streak that has taken her places during last three years.

What is it between you and Emraan? The two of you are always finding each other in a different space during your on-screen encounters.

(Laughs) Ask me! It has become a trend. Silk and Abraham (their on-screen names in The Dirty Picture) hated each other and now after being in five years of marriage, Neetu and Sanju aren't really singing songs around the trees. I think what we have done is project a very normal husband-wife relationship. Aisa hi toh hota hai asli zindagi mein. Thoda pyaar hota hai, thodi anban hoti hai. As an actor though, one thing that I can say is that whenever Emraan and I would be paired opposite each other, there would be a love-hate relationship. Kuch gussa, kuch pyaar, kuch nok-jhok toh rahegi!

In between this all, you have also turned kinky with him in the film.

Arrey shaadi hui hai dono ki, masti bhi hoti hi hai (smiles). That's what is interesting part of a marriage, isn't it? When you see these moments on screen, you realise that yaar aisa hi toh hota hai. Also, even if you are not married and don't have such personal experiences, you would have surely seen and heard it from the other people. This is what we have done; derive the humour and drama from real people and situations.
No wonder, you have turned an everyday woman in the film as well. Your dresses seem to be totally out of place.

Arrey poocho mat; it is a challenge no less to be normal on screen instead of heroine like. My dress designer was terrified when I wanted all the odd choices for me. My director Rajkumar Gupta had to soothe her up and tell her that it was okay to go berserk with the dresses. I too chipped in and told her to stop looking at dressing up Vidya and instead think of Neetu. After all, she is a completely different person so whatever it takes, just go for it. That really helped her ease up. We had a lot of fun putting together these clothes and accessories. It was one lengthy process through.

Ghanchakkar earns over Rs. 22 crore on first weekend

Despite receiving flak from critics on the day of its release, Ghanchakkar has managed to earn Rs 22.3 crore at box office across the first weekend of its release. The Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan-starrer film opened to a slow start, earning Rs. 7.2 crore on Friday.

The earnings remained almost similar on Saturday and Sunday when Ghanchakkar averaged Rs. 7.3 crore Rs. 7.8 crore respectively.

Overseas, too the collections were decent. Ghanchakkar earned NZ$ 7,821 (Rs 3.60 lakhs) in New Zealand and Australia collections averaged at A$ 27,979 (Rs 15.23 lakhs). The movie earned £ 58,413 (Rs 52.90 lakhs) while USA-Canada collections averaged at $ 52,800 (Rs 31.43 lakhs) from 89 screens on Friday.

Ghanchakkar' maintains pace, collects Rs 14. 5 crore in two days

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 30 June 2013 | 02:58

New Delhi: Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi's new film 'Ghanchakkar' might not have good reviews from critics but the audience is still making its way to see the popular Jodi on screen once again. Within two days of its release, the film has been able to collect Rs 14.5 crore at the box office. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "INDIA: #Ghanchakkar Fri Rs 7.2 cr, Sat Rs 7.3 cr. Total: Rs 14.5 cr nett." Though, the film got a lukewarm response on its opening day but rather than any decline at the ticket window, 'Ghanchakkar' maintained its pace by earning almost the same money on the second day of its release.

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta, Vidya Balan plays the role of a boisterous Punjabi housewife in 'Ghanchakkar'. The film also stars Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das.

Review Ghanchakkar : Are four characters too few for a two hour film?

Written By Unknown on Saturday, 29 June 2013 | 03:04

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajesh Sharma, Namit Das
Director: Raj Kumar Gupta

The Indian Express ratings: **

Horny woman who doesn't bother hiding it plus dour man with a secret, has the potential to be a humdinger. Ghanchakkar sets up trying-to-go-straight safe-breaker Sanju, and his blowsy trying-to-be fashion-forward wife Neetu, and a couple of rogues, around a bank heist, and lets them loose. This could have been a hoot, but the execution lets down the premise, and the film remains one of those that could have been edgier and funnier.

It isn't that Emraan and Vidya, playing the married couple squabbling over minor things, are not given a few laugh-out-loud situations. Raj Kumar Gupta, who's done Aamir and No One Killed Jessica before this, gives Sanjay and Neetu a cracking opening, involving bad cooking, resigned eating, and spousal sulks. Post the dining, there is the bedding. And here, where very few Bollywood movies venture with any imagination, the director gifts us an occasional smile. Balan wears wicked red horns and fishtail tights with flourish: she's all bondage hot-and-ready, and Hashmi who usually gets to kiss and leave his lovelies, lets her make the first move.
Two shady fellows, Pandit (Sharma) and Idris (Das), enter their placid lives, enticing Sanju to get back to his tools and a bank vault stuffed with a great deal of cash. The booty, stashed in a suitcase, disappears.

The rest of the film has these four characters searching for it, shooting suspicious glances at each other, being stymied by dead ends.

This is where the film could have quickened, but it slackens instead, leaving Balan to provide a chuckle or two in her hatti katti Punjaban avatar, her accent slipping more than her deeply cut negligees. But the film doesn't make of its characters' quirks as much as it could have.
The Sharma-Das duo has some moments, but is essentially flat. Pretty much like a running gag that starts out funny and ends up as an eye-glaze. And that leads me to a question: are four characters too few (there are a couple of others who show up for a scene or two, but it is with the foursome that all the action rests) for a two hour film? Like some spouses who need additional spice to keep interest from flagging, the unexpected appearance of an extra character perks up the film, and gives us a near-rousing end. Nice wrap, making you wish the rest of the film was as sharp.

Ghanchakkar' earns Rs 7.2 crore on the opening day

New Delhi
: Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi's last film 'The Dirty Picture' had set the cash registers ringing with their power-packed performances and some crackling chemistry. But their latest 'Ghanchakkar' seems to have got just an average response at the box office on the opening day. The film is able to collect Rs 7.2 crore in India on Friday.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "INDIA: #Ghanchakkar Fri Rs 7.2 cr."

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta of 'No One Killed Jessica' fame, 'Ghanchakkar' has not been able to draw audiences to the theatre.

It is for the first time that Vidya Balan has tried her hands at comedy and the actress plays a boisterous Punjabi housewife in 'Ghanchakkar'.

The comedy thriller also stars Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das.
